Past Projects

  Student Projects
  • SemF (SEMantische Fehlerbehandlung, semantics based error correction), 1995
Within the SemF project a group of 8 students created an environment to handle errors made while writing texts. The focus was on detecting errors made while using spatial prepositions. The system presented scenes that should be described by the students, the system then analyzed the enrered texts and commented both syntactical and semantical errors found in the text (e.g. mix-ups of on and above) by comparing the description with the scene shown and checking if all the used prepositions are really adequate. I wrote a natural language parser that provided mechanisms to attach handlers for different types of syntactical errors found while parsing a text and for creating a representation for the spacial object relations described by the analyzed text.
  • Plot (Prolog Lernen mit Online Tutor, learning Prolog with an online tutor), 1997
Plot was aimed at creating a tutoring environment to learn the programming language Prolog. The system was able to give hints on errors made by the student while trying to write a program that solved a given problem. The project was related to the research project Virtual Campus started in 1997.
I was an advisor for the students working on the project for both teamwork related and scientific questions.
  • ORCA (Osnabrück RoboCup Agents), 2001
The ORCA project group created a team for the simulated soccer league of the RoboCup contests. The challenge of the RobuCup simulated league is to create a team of independant software agents capable of teamwork to win a game that's based on a derivation of the rules for real life soccer. The focus for the simulated league is on the necessary planning and cooperation involved in playing soccer. The students managed to create a team that participated in the Robot Soccer World Cup V in 2001 in Seattle and the Soccer World Cup VI in 2002 in Fukuoka.
I was an advisor for the students working on the project for both teamwork related and scientific questions.
  Research Projects
  • RECALL (Repairing Erros in Computer Aided Language Learning), 1995
The goal of project RECALL was to create a learning environment for English as second language. The main focus was detecting and correcting errors made by the student while writing texts. The connection to the project was a result of the previous work on the SemF project in the same area, the parsing system developed by me within the project was extended for use in RECALL.
  • Virtual Campus, 1997-2001
A joint project of the Institute of Applied Linguistics and the Centre for Distance Learning and Further Education at the University of Hildesheim, the Information Systems Institute, Knowledge Based Systems at the University of Hannover and the Institute for Semantic Information Processing at the University of Osnabrück with the goal to create an e-learning environment for several courses.
The subproject I worked is was focused on a tutoring system that supports students in learning the programming language Prolog. The tutoring system was able to analyze the student's program and to give hints on errors made by the student based on a knowledge database related to the programming tasks.
  • Internet Vorting, 1999-2001
The project I-Vote aimed at creating an environment for safe, anonymous voting using the internet. One of the main research topics was the level of acceptance within the society to endorse this kind of voting mechanisms. The second focus were the legal challenges raised by this voting mechanisms as most laws affecting voting are not yet prepared for the information age.
One of the milestones reached by the project was the election for the students council of the University of Osnabrück in the year 2000, this was one of the first legally binding elections allowing internet based votings.
